There are lots of advantages to being a member of the society. We provide people with a fantastic and lovingly cared-for observatory in Newbold that is paid for and maintained by the Chesterfield Astronomical Society.

You’ll become a member of a lively and interesting club that will give you access to some great astronomical equipment as well as a wealth of knowledge on just about every astronomical subject you can think of.

Who are we?

Well, we’re a group comprising of people from all sorts of different backgrounds from business men and women to young students to retired folk and just about everything in between. We come from various walks of life but we’re all drawn together by a mutual fascination for the amazing sights and science of the universe that surrounds us.

Some of us like to understand the current ideas and thinking about the universe, how it was created, and all that technical stuff that humans have been grappling with for thousands of years. Others just want to get a telescope out and stare with wonder at the breath-taking planets, moons, comets, stars and gas clouds that can be seen either in detail using the society’s high-powered telescopes or by using members’ scopes that whilst often less powerful have their own special uses particularly when looking at big objects such as the moon or star fields or star clusters.

There’s all levels of skill found amongst our members. We’re a social bunch too with some members attending camping weekends where they keep their fingers crossed for clear skies and low light pollution but settle for a weekend of socialising with friends when the weather lets them down.

What are the benefits of becoming a member?

If you’re just beginning your new hobby, we can help you choose the right telescope and get you set-up to make sure everything is working properly and that you have the confidence to start making the most of your new kit straight away.

If you think you’d like to get involved with running the society then from six months into your membership you’ll be very welcome to help out with society matters including management of the observatory, projects to improve the facilities, management of special events, delivery of talks to local groups, publicity, technical projects such as radio astronomy and telescope maintenance and maybe new stuff based upon your own ideas too.

Membership can help you develop your knowledge of astronomy rapidly and if you want to specialise in aspects such as solar observing or astro-photography, there are experts on hand who will be delighted to help you.

How do I become a member?

If you would like to become a member of the Chesterfield Astronomical Society, please contact us today. Email us at or via our contact form.

We offer various payment methods including a convenient monthly option so that you can spread the cost over the year using a standing order directly from your bank account. You control how much is paid each month and no-one but you as the bank account holder can change the amount so this payment method is completely safe.

We will also included a gift aid form; if you are eligible, we’d be grateful if you could complete it so that we can get a donation from the government too.

If you’ve ever looked up at the stars and thought you’d like to know more about them then take this opportunity to make a small investment in a Chesterfield Astronomical Society membership and discover some of the amazing sights that can be seen in the skies above Chesterfield. You won’t regret it!
