Pretty Pictures from Ugly Pixels (using GIMP)

Talk by Martin Bradley (Member)

Friday 17th March

Martins talk was more of a look at how your image data can reveal some stunning detail rather than a GIMP tutorial.
Martin used his own data of Messier 42 (M42) The Orion Nebula and chose GIMP as the image processing software of choice as it is free and one a few members use to process their data. One of the complexities however is that it is more akin to the much more expensive Adobe Photoshop in how it operates.
With this in mind, Martin guided us through the normal basic image processing routines such as levels, curves, brightness/contrast etc. and also talked about some of the technicalities of how image data is represented to us on the computer screen.
A very well received and educational talk by members and public alike.
